How can I volunteer to work at the polls during an election?

You may sign up at the Newport Canvassing Office on the first floor of City Hall, 43 Broadway or call the Canvassing Office at 845-5383 for more information.

Mandatory training classes for all Newport poll workers covering the 2012 elections will be held prior to each election, time and place TBA.


How do I register to vote (where do I get a voter registration form)?

If you wish to register to vote in Rhode Island you should request a Rhode Island registration form either through the local canvassing authority, at the Canvassing Office of Newport City Hall, the Canvassing Forms Page, your local library or the Rhode Island Division of Motor Vehicles.

If you wish to vote in any other state, you may request a National Voter Registration Form at the same web site. Instructions and qualification information are also available.


Can I register to vote on-line?

The Rhode Island General Laws do NOT permit persons to register to vote online.


How do I obtain an absentee ballot?

Electors who are house bound or those out of state may call the Canvassing Office at (401) 845-5384 to request an application or on the Canvassing Home Page. Absentee ballot applications are also available at the Canvassing Office located on the first floor in Newport City Hall 43 Broadway.


What do I do if I won't be in the state of Rhode Island on Election Day?

If you have a valid reason for not having applied for an absentee ballot in advance, you may visit the Canvassing Office at Newport City Hall and fill out an emergency ballot.

Emergency ballots are available up to the day before the election by 4pm.
