The Department has been improving wayfaring signage to help visitors find such such destinations as Lower Thames Street, Fort Adams, Easton's Beach and Salve Regina University.

The Department has created a new "3 hour parking limit" sign to replace the black and red signs that seem to dominate the streetscape.

Cliff Walk Vistors should park at Easton's Beach

  • Fourth Grader's Easton's Beach Drawing to be Featured on Newport 2010 Resident Parking Stickers
  • Starting in May, Newport will be installing 30 new "smart" parking meters in Washington Square and Thames Street locations.

The big advantage: these meters accept credit and debit cards. Cities such as Denver, San Diego and Norwalk, Connecticut have found that people very much appreciate the option of using a card rather than fishing around for several quarters to feed the meter. These new meters will be installed on a trial basis, starting May 1, 2010.
