The big advantage: these meters accept credit and debit cards. Cities such as Denver, San Diego and Norwalk, Connecticut have found that people very much appreciate the option of using a card rather than fishing around for several quarters to feed the meter. These new meters will be installed on a trial basis, starting May 1, 2010. Smart Parking and Getting Around NewportIn summer, especially weekends, Newport tends to be congested with traffic. On-street parking is difficult to find. Visitors are encouraged to park at the Newport Visitors Information Center on America's Cup Boulevard. ![]() The Gateway Center is graced with new, refreshed internal signage. The Visitors Center serves as the City's primary public transportation hub, including access to discounted public transit. Visitors Center patrons can receive up to 1/2 hour hour free validated parking. The City also operates the Mary Street lot, between Mary and Church Streets. This facility has a 120 car capacity, has a public restroom and provides residents with up to three hours of free parking once per day. Paid metered parking Smart cards will NOT be available in the Tax Collector's office this season.
